DRIVING

Recently changes in restrictions on diabetic drivers using insulin have been introduced. These mainly are to include hypoglycaemia occurring during sleep as well as during waking hours  as a bar to driving group 1 vehicles. Furthermore  there is now a potential relaxation on insulin treated diabetics regarding driving group 2 vehicles(professional drivers). These were barred previously but provided ratification is obtained common sense will prevail.

Severe and /or recurrent hypoglycaemia remain a public and personal health consideration and precludes driving.  Severe hypoglycaemia is defined as second severe symptomatic episode in 12 months requiring assistance of another person in group 1 whilst debarring happens after a single episode in group 2. No impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia is allowed for group 1 drivers but full awareness is required for group 2 drivers - there is a subtle difference.
