Diabetes claims more lives each year than AIDS or breast cancer, and is the 4th most common cause of death in most developed countries
In a collaborative study between The Diabetes and Vascular Research Centre, Exeter and the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, the rate of road traffic collisions is not increased in patients with insulin treated diabetes. This suggests that this group of patients do not pose a risk to road safety and reiterates the need for an individualised risk based approach when considering driving restrictions.
A population based study from Dundee demonstrated that anaemia was a significant independent risk factor for coronary heart disease in Type 2 diabetes.
Also in Dundee it was shown in a preliminary epidemiological study that the use of Metformin may be associated with a reduced risk of cancer in Type 2 diabetes.
