Haemoglobin A1c
This glycated fraction of haemoglobin ,which is a constituent of the red blood cells(RBC), depends on the level of sugar during the production of the RBCs . These cells live for about 120 days and the production is continuous.
The table below shows the level of HbA1c reflecting the average reading of blood sugar in a period extending back 6 weeks to 3 months. The current guidelines take HbA1c of less than 7.5%, and less than 6.5% in the presence of complications as ideal. Evidence shows that staying below 6.5% precludes complications.
