Complications of diabetes
It is better to understand diabetes as a disease process that affects small and large blood vessels, and blood sugar elevation is only one aspect of the disease process. This process is fuelled by the level of lipids, the lack of exercise and poor dietary control. There is a myth that Type 2 diabetes is not as serious as Type 1. This unfortunately in a few cases has led to neglect of diabetes and inviting complications sooner than later. Further details of the picture can be seen by looking at different target organs which are affected by the disease process.
1. The eyes can be affected by damage to the blood vessels at the back of the eye* where the retina receives visual signals. The lens at the front of the eye can be affected by the formation of cataracts.
