It might be helpful to imagine the human body as a bank account, where regular deposits are the meals that you consume and the withdrawals represent exercise mediated expenditure of calories.  As with banks, the longer you leave your capital untouched, the more it attracts interest, in our model due to age related decline  in the metabolism, the passage of time leads to an increase in weight anyway.

It is important that diet addresses two aspects:-


Quality

Quantity


Diets should be balanced, realistic,  and cover the individual needs for carbohydrate, protein and minimal amounts of fat.  The amount of food ingested is important as “too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily good”.  Some may think that unregulated intake of carbohydrates and fruits has no detrimental effect on the control of diabetes but this is clearly unfounded.  It is advisable that you do not eat other than sitting down and always eat from a plate rather than eating  on the move or snacking between meals.  The type of food is important for a diabetic too, as foods with a low glycaemic index have a better blood sugar profile compared to processed sugars that peak quickly and on occasions can be associated with a rebound effect.
