You are at a risk of developing diabetes :-

1.  If you are over 40, the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes increases.

2.  If there is a member of your family who has diabetes, you are at a increased risk of diabetes.

3.  Ethnic origin, Afro-Caribbean and South East Asian origins, predisposes you to diabetes.

4.  Weight.   The more overweight you are, the greater your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  This unfortunately also holds true for heart disease, high blood pressure and other health problems.

5.  During pregnancy, ladies at risk of developing gestational diabetes, which could lead later in life to Type 2 diabetes.

6.  High blood pressure puts you at a higher risk of developing diabetes.  If you have diabetes, high blood pressure accelerates complications.

7.  Sedentary life style increases your risk of diabetes.

8.  Having high cholesterol level in the presence of diabetes makes you more prone to developing heart disease, or peripheral vascular disease.

9.  If you have suffered with pancreatic disease, exhaustion of the Beta cells of the pancreas leads to diabetes.

10.  If you are on steroids for conditions such as asthma, polymyalgia rheumatica, arthritis then this treatment can increase your risk of developing diabetes.

11.  Other rare causes of diabetes include Thiazide diuretics, some psychotropic medications and some antibiotics, such as Ciprofloxacillin.  Some hormonal conditions such as  Cushing’s disease, acromegaly can lead to diabetes.
